One Shot, Oil on Canvas, by Mallory Shumake whose piece is in
the gallery displayed in the 10 x 5 Show in building two of the Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts Campus
This
piece is by Mallory Shumake, a twelfth grade student who goes to New Orleans Center for
Creative Arts. It is displayed in the gallery of building two, of the Alexander W. Dreyfoos campus. Shumake appears to have experience in oil painting which is seen in the piece through the complexity of the design elements. I personally deeply enjoy the creativity exerted with in this piece. The
artist has a hand shooting a bullet through mist. The hand and gun is well
drawn and the mist is distributed equally among the paper. I believe that the
message of the piece is that the artist
has gone through obstacles, but is still pushing through strongly. This
is well displayed with the bullet pushing the mist, I personally think Shumake conveyed
this message very well.
This
piece unfortunately has a few flaws in my opinion. For my tastes I would have preferred less mist in the foreground of the piece, to create a smoother display. This would have allowed more of the hand to be visible and present in the piece, I would have rather the hand be more present opposed to its ambiguous nature as it is now in the piece. The piece needs a little bit better distribution of darks and lights to balance it out, in my opinion. But over all it is a
magnificent piece of art. This artist has a great potential with her work and I
can't wait to see what she has to offer in the future.
