The exhibition Dance of the Cuckoos by Michael Zansky, which
started on October 24th, is causing quite an ecstatic uproar at the
Boca Museum of Arts. Its main focus, or at least for me it was, the grand
eccentric paintings scattered neatly on the walls. The paintings consist of two
main subjects, science and storytelling. While looking at the oil painting
Valley of the Kings, the wolf in the background portrays movement, this
definitely caught my eye.
Not only were the paintings bizarre with almost a funhouse
accent to them, as if that’s not enough to keep someone staring for hours,
there is even more in the exhibition. On the back left and right corners of the
room there are two installation pieces that beckoned for everyone in the room
to draw closer to them. The installations are what Mr. Zansky is known best
for. These are called, Zansky’s Optical Works. Once he creates sculptures, they
are magnified and distorted funhouse style as they slowly rotate on turntables
(as you can see in the top left).
“Eh, I’m not very fond of funhouse art, but I guess everyone has their own taste in art,” an elderly woman said to her accomplice, adding: “This is not happy art, it frightens me.” She then stumbled out of the room, almost falling various times.
Everyone does have different views, we can all agree on that. The art showcased may be a little too much for some people. If you decide to go, by the time you are done with the astounding exhibition, you can share your own thoughts which will hopefully inspire you to simply create.
