A Miniature Fairytale Feeling

By Isamar Jaquez

Dreyfoos School of the Arts is currently having a Miniature piece show in the Gallery in building 9. The show involves several pieces from student artists who create work of art less than 3 X 5.

I, myself, am a fan of art pieces that make me reminiscence about being a little girl reading my books about fairy tales. They were very silly stories that made me giggle and smile with all the situations the characters would get into. What fascinate me the most is the environment the characters lived in, which was mostly nature such as Alice in Wonderland.

This piece of artwork got my interest after spotting it in the small crowd of miniature drawings, photos and sculptures. The soft colors the artist used gave it a childish feature that can prove that the piece has a good meaning behind it. A good choice the artist made was the use a small black box to keep the piece inside. The dark color contrast with the soft and light colors, which make it pop out. I do notice contrast difference happening within the piece.
For example: The dark and rich butterfly against the baby pink. The vermilion rose on top of the ivory tea cup.

The bunny, flowers and butterflies give it a child-like essence, which makes it fun to look at because of its innocence. The atmosphere where the bunny is seems very soothing as if it was in a zen garden. I feel, personally, I can connect with this artwork and imagine myself in the position of the bunny. Being in a small place without worries, small interaction and feeling helpless without getting attacked my persecutors.

Fairy tales have soft atmospheres that make the reader happy while reading each word. This art piece, when looked at, gives away that “fairy tale feeling” which is why it is my favorite piece out of whole show!
