Aspiring Fashion Designer: Eden Manresa

Here in the visual department at Dreyfoos, the abundance of students expressing their love for fashion might recently be greater than it has ever been. Among these students is Eden Manresa, a 10th grade student who has been persistently making art in the field of fashion during her high school career. Her motives, styles, inspirations, and other contributing factors might be easily deemed as “unique,” and are effective ways for her to express her talent.

            Many interested in fashion are inspired by everyday aspects of life. These day-to-day influences might come from a good book you’ve read, a song you heard on the radio, or even an object you might get a glimpse of on a bus ride home. While Eden says this is a source of her inspiration as well, she likes to turn ordinary ideas into something not-so-ordinary, resulting in a transformed finished product. Her materials are also “ordinary,” she adds, because she enjoys challenging her mind and putting her knowledge to the test, allowing for the discovery of new techniques or additional ideas. An outfit she might make, such as a top and skirt, may include recycled and reused materials, since she enjoys the process of turning one thing into another that may look or express something different towards the end.

            Eden has produced designs for various local fashion shows, such as the recent Eg2 show that took place earlier this month. Her work was also shown at the annual Armoury Fashion ARTillery Show and she won third place. Throughout the rest of her high school career, she wants to continue to produce more clothes and showcase her work by participating in future opportunities.

Music Sheet to Gowns

On May 8, 2014 at 7 pm, Eg2 held a fashion show in Clematis where models walked down the catwalk to showcase students’ outfits they created. The catwalk was filled with many beautiful and unique clothing made from a variety of different materials from fabric to caution tape and much more. Students participated from a range of different high schools and middle schools. Each weekend leading up to the show, the students would go to Resource Depot to discuss their ideas for their outfits and find materials to use. A large crowd watched and listened to upbeat music as the models walk down the catwalk in awe of the students’ work.

The picture above shows a dress created by Zoey Elakman and modeled by her too; she is a digital media major who attends A.W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts. Her gown is made of numerous amounts of music sheets that she rolled up. She also hand folded the little flowers, also made out of music sheets, and put little black circles in the middle. The flowers were placed around the top part of the gown, bando, and her hair. To go with the dress, she made her own clutch that was made out of duct tape and her high heels were also made out of duct tape, glitter, and the folded flowers. 

Scholastics Art Show 2014: An explosion of talent

This year the annual Scholastics Art Show was held in a re-purposed bank. Art was hung throughout the lobby and offices. The large space was used to its full advantage, including a closet in the back of the building which contained an installation. Four televisions were used to play student films and portfolios. All works on display won a Silver or Gold Key from the Scholastics Art and Writing Competition.

Work of all media was present. The front rooms were mostly 2-D pieces while the back room (originally the bank's work space) had long counters that were filled with art ranging from sculptures to comic books to shadow boxes. 

Creamy pink icing, a fluffy donut with a sprinkle of... pills? Addiction by Julia Roberts is ceramic sculpture that is both aesthetically pleasing with a subtle reference to a more serious topic. Craftsmanship of the piece is wonderful as well as the idea behind the art.

Catherine Chen's Complementary Bunny is an adorable stuffed rabbit created of patterned blue and orange cloth. The rabbit is outfitted with a tweed vest and looks like something off the pages of a children's story book. The complementary colors make the bunny look more lively and playful. The choice of the cloth also impacts the piece as the floral patterns give the bunny a whimsical air.

Contained within a delicate looking glass case is a replica of a girl's bedroom. This tiny box, no more than a foot long, has a bed, two sofas, and even a pitcher of orange juice. It was crafted by Izzi Hays. Accompanying this sculpture is a collection of five photographs of the room in different exposures. The title of the piece is The Stages of Grief, which are depicted in the photographs, the different lighting representing the "stages." Overall this piece conveys its message well and the attention to detail is remarkable.

The 2014 Scholastics Show was definitely a success. It was hosted by Eg Squared, a nonprofit organization that supports youths in their artistic endeavors. Visit them at their website:
